Fish for Knowledge Competition 2007/08

Carp Angling as become one of the largest growing sports in the UK. With a lot more Commercial Carp waters and huge range of high grade tackle now available it’s never been easier to take up the sport.

The problems with this “Instant Carping” scenario is that the real value of Angling seems to be lost, most of today’s top Anglers will have started off at a young age either going with there dad or a small group of friends to the local River, Canal or pond and using a worms and bread to catch Perch, Chub, Roach or just about anything that took your bait.

Tackle was irrelevant, many days me an a group of friends would bike 5 miles to the local river with one rod and some bread pinched out of the kitchen at home and take turns in catching a fish, scouting the river banks for bits of tackle others had dropped.

The size of fish or species of fish was also something that never bothered me, just catching and being outside was the only thing that mattered, there was always the big un that got away that was the size of a crocodile and ya mates had seen eels 10’ long etc, its those little stories and experiences that makes it more fun and keeps ya going back.

Over time you begin to learn, nature teaches you, the fish teach you and your mistakes teach you, as you learn the lessons and natural progression takes its course your angling becomes more personal and your quarry becomes more individual, you start to hunt fish, by species, by weight and even now by name. No matter if you’re fishing for roach in a canal or Carp in a 100acre pit, it’s the path you have taken to get there that will determine your success.

It is a common fact that these days most people are after big carp straight away, no experience needed, open a mag look at a rig, go to a tackle shop and up to the nearest carp puddle and you are given an instant chance of catching a 15,20 or even a 30lbr. Although this easy route can guarantee instant success in your chosen sport it teaches you nothing. 20 years ago a mid double or low 20 was regarded as a very big fish, there where a lot less anglers on the banks because carp where a lot less commercialised, local ponds had myths of carp and the odd angler would dare to spend time and money in the capture, these anglers are the pioneers these are the people who did there time and gained the experience. Today it’s just a case of turning up to a 5 acre specifically designed carp lake and trying to catch one of the 900 new arrivals in the lake.

For the younger generation this seems to be the normal thing to do. Well in my opinion it is not. Knowledge is power and gains respect.

I have personally set up the following Competition as an experiment. I have given the younger generation a chance to try and grasp the thrill of angling. 3 months is a blink of an eye to most but I do believe this short period of time will be beneficial to there angling life and there future.

Over the next week I will post up the entire details of the comp and full list of people involved.

But the general aim of the comps is as follows:

(Pasted from previous post)

All entrants must be 16 or under.
Will have to register with me, providing the details I request.
The comp will run from November 1st until January 31st.
all registered entrants will run a Blog on NCFF.

The comp will be judged on angling merit and knowedge gained, not solely carp captures, all course species will count. The way you write in your blog and how you express your experience. New things learned and obviously difficulty of captures
Lakes, rivers and canals will stand as venues.

The Whole of the NCFF members will cast the vote based on merit of your whole blog and you’re fishing experiences. It is about what you learn by yourself, your understanding of angling, fish captures and the way your blog reads.

No one will be allowed to post on your blogs, the more information you ask for on the sites the less merit will be awarded.

If anyone is interested in this then please PM me with your full details inc email address and I will send you a registration form and a full list of rules.

Don’t just wanna see carp in ya blogs and everything caught on hair rigs. A roach caught on maggot will be just as rewarding, writing and including decent Photography of your surroundings will gain tonnes of merit.

The comp is open to anyone 16years and under. Anyone wanting to enter needs to show interest and a letter of consent will have to be signed by parent or Guardian.

The Prize is as follows:

2 x Greys Podigy 2.75tc rods
2 x Shimano Ultegra 12000 xtas
2 x Fox MX alarms
2 x Nash Indicator sets
4 x single bank sticks

1 x JRC Roamer Net
1 X JRC beanie mat
1 X JRC Weigh Sling
1 X Rod Hutchy Reuben Scales
Selection of end tackle, spools of line and other bits.

The above items could change at any time but will only be replaced by items of the same or higher value

Hopefully 1 of the bait companies will be supplying some bait…TBC.

This Competition is to be run in conjunction with NCFF.

I will keep you all informed over the next week and a full set of Guidelines and rules will be posted shortly.

I will appreciate any input and suggestions on this matter.

Cheers.

Lilsteve.

No responses to this one lads?????????? what you all playing at????????

All it takes is to sign up at NCFF and drop Steve a PM expressing your interest. Age range has now been increased too to under 17's as a lot of the current applicants would be 17 by the time the comp' ended. So if you have a family member 17 or under at the moment let them know about this. All of the gear is top drawer and will give the youngster the best possible start to a lifetimes worth of angling.

NCFF can be found here.
