I need some help.

As part of my perch campiagn I will be fishing the local canals (Macclesfield and Peak Forest).. Problem is there are miles and miles to choose from and with the exception of a few section targeted for pike I have never seen it fished. My plan is to walk to canal and throw a lure around to see if I can find areas holding perch to concentrate on. Problem is I am a total numty when it comes to this method. So questions are....

Pike are present so what set up would I need?

and

lure or spinner or both. Anyone had sucess with a particular type/pattern for perch. The canal is generally carrying colour so does this effect type and colour on the day?

Using the 'Venues Map' on the NSA site i have located some likely looking spots (lock pounds, bridges, bends, wides etc). Saves a lot of leg work when bank time is at a premium.

Cheers

Eh up damo!

We touched on this before (http://www.northernspecimenangling.com/viewtopic.php?t=319) and this is what i`d be doing today if one or two drinks last night didn`t end up being a good few more!

Basically my prefered method mainly for the fun aspect for perching would be ultralight spinning which is as the name implies is spinning but in mini, i.e. tiny rod, reel, 10lb braid and tiny spinners, plugs and jig&rubbers (I may even bung an article on this later) which is great fun and productive for plenty of smaller fish but requires specialist gear to get the best out of it (£!) and I`m not convinced as a method it sorts out the better fish although the small ones feel much bigger!

BUT!
In my honest opinion, most of my better Perch on lures have not come by design and come along whilst out after Pike.
My advice would be, to get realistic and also handle any Pike would be a nice light to med. action spinning rod at about 7' coupled with a decent smallish reel loaded 20lb braid(fireline is best for fixed spool reels- I think) to be on the safe side and always use a wire trace.
Lure wise, try to keep it simple for now but in my experience spinners in any sizes are good for perch of all sizes but ones in firetiger patterns have been productive as have larger ones such as ondex intended for pike with red on them. The best plugs for me have been ones with erratic actions such as Kwikfish and Lazy Ike types as well as medium sized alphabet type patterns (Big 'S' type) also I know from friends the rattlin' Rapalas, Rapala team eskos and some of the other deep diving Rapala patterns are good(these can be fished slowly and have a good pronounced wiggle). Again bright colours have produced with firetiger rated highly.
I also have great confidence in rubber baits with small to medium shads such as the Storm wildeye ones as well as jig heads with curly tail grubs with I`ve used alot and caught alot on them (Pike love em too, even the tiniest baits!) with most colours scoring but in particular red, red & cream, bright green and brown recently- the beauty about these is they are cheap and you can stock up on these and not be afraid to throw them into suicide swims (where the Perch usually are!) but they don`t snag up to much anyway.
Most of the lures mentioned will work in coloured water and don`t forget how agressive perch get and they will hit BIG lures too, so don`t be scared scaling up a bit now and then!
My favourite lure if you can get hold of one is a Berkley frenzy one with a hard body and soft tail, again its in firetiger but Perch really go for this!

Hope this helps!

I`m only an hour away if you fancy using your venue to host a NSA social?

Best of luck and let me know how you get on.

Lure fishing for Perch is a fantastic way to spend an evening, particularly in the summer, we used to go for a couple of hours on the ultralights and last time we went in earnest we both had 50+ fish and both had 2lb+ fish on one stretch of the L&L.
Sadly the sausage rolls have now eaten them all apparently, but I`ll keep an eye on it just in case

Cheers Mark top advice.

I see what you are saying about catching them with lures by design and any pike which come my way will be a welcome distraction. If I do find some stripeys I will have a go for them with my favourite method of float fished worm. A cracking way to catch them.

I have the rod and reel for the job and will get equiped over the next couple of weeks for a bash.

I will have a mooch around and if it does the business with either perch or pike I will let you know. You are all more than welcome to come over for a social.

Cheers

Glad to help, we are allways looking for venues like canals which don`t get affected by rain so much so cheers for that, we may well take that up!

Have a look on ebay as most of the lures mentioned are not trendy and should be got cheaply on here.

If you have a look on the venues map at Higher Poynton, near Stockport you can the area of canal.

Cheers again

Also worth a look;
http://www.harrissportsmail.com/
http://www.thelureshack.com/
http://www.sovereignsuperbaits.co.uk/
UK based suppliers and often their bargain sections offer the smaller lures at a steal as UK trend seems to be the bigger the better for esox
and:
http://www.cabelas.com
http://www.basspro.com
In the US, fantastic for all gear, so cheap and they are light years ahead! make use of the strong exchange rates and fill yer boots!
The yanks have loads of different species too so choice of lures especially to the perch angler is immense!

I have taken your advice Marc and have purchased a light/med 7 ft rod (shimano technium) and been keeping my eye out for spinners and lures. Just need a suitable reel and when the rod arrives i'll pop down the tackle shop with it.

Its a type of fishing I have never tried before so looking forward to it.

I have been given a couple of fox chubby shads but no box. Could you tell me how you fish them?

Cheers

Yo Damo,

The beauty about lures like the fox chubby shads etc is that if they are moving they are working!
But this time of year jigging them near the bottom should be good (especially for pike though!) or a steady/varied retrieve they are good. Get out and have a play with them, you`ll see what I mean! You can get those sort of lures as well as the curly tailed grubs and others for peanuts from the state so bear that in mind-loads more rubber for your ££!
Try not to let too much slack line out whilst jigging as fish especially perch sometimes just inhale em!
You were saying about a new reel in another post, box clever and the same one will do (The diawa TDR mentioned before was bought by me for lures but it is sold as a match reel and all its caught so far is barracuda to nigh on 20lb so it will piss English Pike and Perch!) as long as it will take plenty of 20-30lb braid and preference is for a front drag every time.

Keep us posted!

Marc

Indeed they do, there has been loads written in my LAS mags about spinnerbaits for Perch and some of my mates swear by em, I however have done sh*te with them! and therefore have no confidence
I do aim to give them a blast again though. Again spinnerbaits are a piece of piss to fish as if they are moving they are working and are probably the best Pike lure ever!

Bloody rivers all flooded, I`ve now been inspired to get out Perching with the lures, even joined new clubs with miles of rivers but they`re all up and coffee coloured. This displeases me! Gaah

Time to get out and practice what we preach I think! Fishy

Fish in time?

Not unless your lures have plow and gritter attachments!!

Seriously, this weather is getting right on my tits now, rain, wind, wind & rain! now its looking good we`re gonna get arctic gales & 8" of bloody snow!!

good look with it though, and be carefull-it gets addictive and then expensive!!

BTW, I just placed an order at Harris Angling and in the sales they were some "Musky Inovations Nano Dawgs" in the sale section(these are the baby brothers of the legendary Bulldawg & springdawg-which are/were a lure phenomenom!) so I got a couple, and these look the dogs for big perch- well worth a look

i'd leave the lures at home and go with some minnow livebaits excellent fun, caught perch as small as 2-3oz on minnow livebaits. the river aire in leeds town centre is brilliant for minnow livebaiting, if you do try it sometime dont leave the bites to develop strike straight away as you'll end up with an extremely deep hooked perch 3seconds max i found best oh and the take em tail first unlike pike

Weathers crap but had to go out and give the new rod a go. All the local lakes are suffering with the wind so I found a couple of sheltered bays down on the canal. The water was coloured so started with a firetiger rapala.

3 hours and two small jacks (Marc has probably got a bigger lure!) taken from tight against far bank reeds. Both takes within 5 mins of each other and seconds in to the retrieve. Great stuff.
