Went down the Wharfe at Pool in Wharfedale on Saturday 15/12/07 with Wayne(WKD) for a spot of trotting specifically for Grayling.
Now, considering the last time i fished was a couple of weeks ago in Cuba (which i will write about next time) this was a right shock to the system! Chuffin' Freezing!! I mean brass monkeys were out looking for welding rods!! Freezing fog- the lot.
We fished on the Leeds stretch mostly downstream of the road bridge (tickets available from petrol station at Pool)
Considering how cold it was and in between the rod rings freezing up all the bloody time (which wasn`t right annoying!!) I had a great day trotting maggots under a chubber float and travelling fairly light keeping mobile, for about 20+ small Grayling and a couple of speckled vermin too!
I wore my breathable chesties and waded alot which was a bit daft and didn`t get the feeling back into my toes until at least 5hrs after i`d gotten home! but that did definately give me an edge as wayne in his little booties struggled.
How we suffer for our art!

it was a very enjoyable day out and will go back asap-well worth a look

22/12/07
BACK ON THE PREDATORS!.....................shouldn`t have! Gaah
The walking tree (aka WKD aka Wayne) and myself decided that owing to the weather getting milder and rivers looking like the best bet we should get busy and try and get some Pike caught and reckon we`d be on the deads.
Long story short, Not in same clubs-need day ticket, find ticket stretch after hours scouring websites and maps(Ouse just below york)Wayne gets held up, we can`t find access, find it, not what i had in mind, claggy mud everywhere, and deathtrap swims too far apart for a social, I blank, Wayne has a jack of about 6ish, he forgets his spreader block so i have to leg it up the bank! Banging Head
Not a disaster but wish we`d been able to get a better venue-York books to be purchased for the new year me thinks!
Also that place screams Perch at you.
The pluses- My new Rapala Prowear bib and brace and jacket are the nuts- highly reccomended! Clapping Also two of my old mates passed as they were fishing from their boat and stopped for a chat, great blokes and was lovely to catch up, Respect these days they are pretty much dedicated lure anglers and one of them came out with the quote of the day, I asked him if he still had a dabble at a carp water he used to fish with my old feller, he replied"would you ever throw a hook into a sod of grass and cast it into a field and fish for sheep? because that all carp fishing is!"
Genius and hilarious!
Nevermind I`m gonna go for the Grayling again in the morning with the old feller and Glenzilla (skelator) hopefully have good things to report back! Wink

23/12/07 River Wharfe-Pool (Again)
Frozen toes and gentles-back on the Grayling!
Went back on the Wharfe today with the old feller and Glenzilla(aka skelator)
After last saturdays beano I have been itching to have another stab at the Grayling-if nothing else to get a bend in the rod! Not quite as cold as last week but still bloody cold! Was not as good as last week in terms of numbers but strangely most of the fish were much bigger even though we fished roughly the same areas, indeed Glen and I probably had PB's today with fish of about a pound and a half.
I think I finished on about 8 fish mostly around the pound mark, Glen had the most- I think it was about 10 and a speckled vermin and the old feller had 5, I think.
A really enjoyable day and now the pressure is off and I`ve nobbled a few I`m gonna try next time with the fly.
I can really reccommend having a go next time you`re struggling in the winter and its freezing cold, get yourself out for Grayling they are cracking fish, beautiful and pound for pound will match just about anything for a scrap, and will feed even the coldest of weather, all you need is trotting gear and a couple of pints of maggots-blinding!
We are fortunate in Yorkshire in having some good stretches of the Wharfe, Nidd, Ure, etc, all well worth a look.

3 times in a week, its been a while since the rods have seen this much daylight!
Been wanting to get out with some lures for a bit now, so I reckon that will be next, but we`ll see. Maybe see if this NSA social comes off.

HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS AND TIGHT LINES AND ALL THE BEST FOR 2008 Grin

09/02/08 FREEDOM AT LAST!!

It seems like an age but finally got out fishing today!
Glenzilla (AKA skelator) called me midweek to tell me that his pass-out card had been stamped for this afternoon for a few hours and it was the Nidd on the no1 stretch he fancied.
Fair do`s, I quickly decided that it was the lures for some preds for me and he would sit it out for some other kind of species (I forget which but they didn`t have teeth so i wasn`t interested!! Big Smile )
After a pretty shitty morning I eventually picked Glen up at about an hour late (sounds like someone else we know...WKD?) and landed on the Nidd about 2pm.
The river looked good, particularly for Glen on the baits - up a little and carrying only a bit of colour and I fancied my chances a bit too.
I took two set-ups, 7ft baitcaster/multi/30lb braid for bigger lures and a med. light spinning outfit loaded with 20lb braid for smaller lures with Perch in mind(thanks for that Damo!) I had a few different lures to play with today that I`d not had chance to use before namely Fox chubby shads in 3" & 6", creature spins, chubby spins, 6" replicants as well as a Berkeley Frenzy thing (unfashionable but productive these little monkeys are) and some Diawa Springdawg copies (Springdawgs are my favourite out and out Pike lure) Firstly I kicked of with the lighter outfit and the 3" Chubby and this was the only time it got use to be fair and quickly began to regret bringing it (I hate carrying too much when out Lure fishing- It really holds you back if you have to keep putting stuff down to fish and pick it back up to move on in terms of percentage of casts made) And quickly swapped over to the heavier set up and straight away on about my third cast hooked a lovely looking Pike possibly double figures right under my feet on said Berkeley lure, Which then decided to spit it back out me.........BOBBINS! Banging Head still, not a bad start and I never tire of seeing Pike strike and snake away-superb! from then on I stuck to the bigger stuff and held out for the Pike.
The wierd thing about today is I had a couple of other definate takes but had lots of little plucks on the retrieve and as I was using soft baits all day I noticed they were all carrying teethmarks (all new lures used today and it always worth keeping an eye for damage to softbaits) I then had a couple of hits to a creaturespin which came to nothing, so i swapped over to a 6" perch replicant and first retrieve this little beauty snaffled it!
Went to use the camera and it was flat as a fart! Good old Glen came to the rescue with his phone! bless him!

It was ineresting she was covered in leeches and obviously with the delicate takes earlier would make me think that they aint moving much at the moment. We fished on until dark and had nothing else definate and Glen specifically asked me not to mention on here how he got on, so I won`t. Although he did whup me last time (But I`ve pulled one back!!)

I`m gonna get out this coming week hopefully, I have plans to get out and have a go with some lures and have a look at some new venues with an NSA social in mind and maybe with some deads on a stillwater I`ve been toying with looking at. may even get up the Lakes-who knows with not much work coming in and the coming weeks weather not looking too bad at all.
I`m off now to trim my beard so i no longer scare Frances!(Glens Daughter)

11/02/08 Flinging rubbers again!
Dunno whats up with me, not only getting out twice in a week, but struggling to get out early at the moment! By the time me bitches were sorted (two of em needed walking and the other was on a course in Wakey!.....just kidding!) it was about about 11am before I reached my destination which today was the Yorks Derwent to start with, which took me about 1hr 45mins to get there-you can tell its the end of the tax yr can`t you with all the bloody roadworks! Banging Head
It was the first time I`d seen this stretch and it was still well up, possibly 3ft and coffee coloured and the field around was still waterlogged, coupled with me not being entirely sure if I was on the right bank and basically poaching as the yr books directions are somewhat brief I was not at my most content!
anyway, clipped on a yellow tailed "creaturespin" and after maybe a dozen casts nobbled a jack of perhaps 4lb, not a bad start and made me feel a touch happier. Slipped him back and then your friend and mine, the walking tree/deciduous dobson/WKD gave me a ring which is always a delight but he`d just called to insult me (sour grapes) as he has doing his professional trainspotter thing or playing at thomas the tank engine or whatever he does and I was playing out, nevermind old bean, eh?
moved downstream a bit but being alone and the banks were DODGY and slippy and boots getting ever clogged up and not much else showing, decided on getting back to the van, coffee and foxtrot oscar over to the Ouse as the crapnav said it was only 30mins away.
ended up below Linton on Ouse and River was much better level, but banks just as dodgy! I`m OK with a certain amount of risk but I`ll cut right back on that if I`m alone (Quite happy being alive thank you!) this restricted me to only a few pegs as if i were to nobble one netting it would mean a certain soaking!
after only a few casts hooked a suicidal jack which took a green 6" chubby right at the bank and hit it so fast it beached itself!
I ended up like last sunday with loads of delicate plucks and rubber baits(used nothing but today!) coming back totally shredded, and again creaturespins, chubbies, deviants and replicants getting attention so must be doing something right and maybe its just water conditions which to be fair have not been ideal which are making them not feed with gusto?
enjoyed the sesh despite only fishing less than 3hrs in total, and a good recce on new club waters.
Done OK lately, must get ready for a run of blanks! hopefully deadbaiting on friday see what that brings!

02/03/08
Soaking some dead fish!

we`d been on about a social for some time but not been able to get it going. So this was it!
I say social, Damo and I decided to meet up and have a stab for some Pike on the deadbaits. We arranged to meet at the car park of a very large exposed pennine lake towards Damo which was easily accessable for me too. It was a bit of a disaster due the weather with stupidly high gusty winds at 5am of the morning so we exchanged a few texts and had a venue change at the 11th hour(5.30ish) and decided a more sheltered venue for our own comfort more than anything and we dropped on Pebley on the yorks/derbys border which Damo had fished alot in the past and i`d visited once and does have a rep for throwing out the odd good fish.
After a pretty horrid drive in the van blowing all over three lanes of the M1 we met about 7.30 and after a quick shufty decided that the near corner would be best to get out of the weather which was showing no signs of slowing.
Bailliff came, bought tickets(£5/day)got set up, wind stopped pretty much!
with hindsight we should`ve moved then but after all that I couldn`t be arsed which is not the best attitude to adopt for predator fishing!
That said it wasn`t all bad, nice to meet other NSA users on the bank and hopefully this will become more regular for all of us. However we did blank! but then again I don`t think I did enough to catch, barring putting a kite (drifter) out a couple of times I was being very lazy, Damo moved on a bit but still nothing doing but then nobody else fishing did any better!
I remember why I got into lure fishing now, stillwater deadbaiting is sometimes very slow at best and increasingly find myself getting frustrated with the inactivity of it all, as if I`d been on the lures and blanked I would`ve come away happier that I`d done pretty much all I could to catch i.e. been mobile & swapped baits etc. I don`t think I`ll be doing much of it next winter and if the rivers are unfishable I`ll go stillwater perching or chuck some loo-ahs!
Anyone thinking of fishing Pebley, I would reccomend trying to go mobile and find the fish and take a large pinch of salt for when the bailliffs come along with their stories!!!(you`ll see what I mean!)
Thanks to Damo for the company, and we`re hopefully playing out next week (thru the week hopefully) so anyone fancying joining us let me know.

30/03/08 Pebley res.
Having not been able to make time for a dabble for a good while, Damo and I arranged to meet up at Pebley again. This was with half an eye on the coming few months and the tench as much as getting out and doing a bit now. I`ve been threatening to chuck some lures in it for a while so I did, and only planned on a half day sesh whilst Damo sat it out primarily for some roach and he also babysat my big flask so in between walking round I could have a nice cup of inspiration!
Long story short, we both failed in our tasks! the best I managed other than a couple of half assed follows from little `uns was one hook up and lost it quickly, it did feel like a decent fish but then don`t all the ones you lose!!
mangled my chubby shad too and had its tail away (see photo, the bottom one is how it should look!) to add insult to injury!

We both ended up bitterly dissapointed in a venue we planned on joining for the year and putting in some time as you may have read elsewhere on NSA. Firstly the litter was all over and considering how much the bailiffs are about its a bit poor. Secondly the nobheads who descended on the place at around lunchtime, Chavs no other word for them-anglers too with the pants in socks, cans of wife beater - no stereotype left unfulfilled!, Damo even saw one of them ride his motorbike down the dam wall.
I`m pretty sure the bailliff means well by letting them on-he`s a nice bloke really but he lost two season tickets that day and its lucky they were seen before tickets were purchased.
The search for a tench water continues..........................
I`m gonna have a couple of final forays after the pike coming up and also get out with the fluff chucking before the tenching can start in earnest.
A big plus is the weather is picking up now and is hopefully on the turn.
Lets see if stays!
