I got pretty bored this afternoon watching TV and full of cold so decided to muck around with some rigs after seing a trap door spider on the discovery channel.

Brainstorm kicked in!

What if you could create a rig with a completely hidden hook that would not be spotted over a carpet of bait yet have your hook ready for the take on a pick up?

Hemp Trapdoor rig is what I came up with and tested it in an old fish tank in my garage.

You need:

Kryston Bogey
Flourocarbon
No' 6 split shot
BB split shot

First tie a hair loop about the size of a 10p coin out of the flourocarbon.
Whip this hair loop onto your hook knotless knot style with the flourocarbon.
Place 3 No'8 shot at 9, 12, and 3 o'clock on the hair loop with the eye of the hook being 6 o'clock
Mould a piece of Bogey over the hair and flaten out to make a big flap with the lead shot as close to the edges as possible.
Now take a piece of rig floss/dental floss and add a BB shot tight and close to the point of the hook but behind the barb (if you are using barbless use rig glue or superglue to stop it slipping off the point).

What you now have is a point heavy rig which will be covered by the flap of Kryston bogey. Cover the bogey (top only) with hemp and job is done. The shot on the hook makes sure it lands first and gets covered by the flap coated with hemp. On a pick up the weighted hook will hook the bottom lip.

Best of all the hook is completely hidden by the bait.

This rig is untried and only tested in a tank. But should work. I know i'll be trying it next time out.

Giles.
