I am going to be fishing the Macclesfield Canal this winter for mainly perch but will have a go for the pike too. On a recce I have noticed that the stretch is clear from locks for about 5 miles.

Some of the sections are cut into the ground with steep heavily wooded banks on both sides. These sections receive little light and are dull and damp. Others however are in open county side with flat banks and receive lots of light. The 'feel' between the two is very different.

The question is does this matter? I suppose it depends where the bait fish will be but which will they prefer. Any ideas?

Cheers

Damo

Eh up Damo,

One thing I have found whilst after Perch is that they do like cover, but fishing being what it is there will be exceptions to prove me wrong!
But I would leave the open sections alone - for now and aim for snaggy area first unless you see their dinner! Also i have found that if you find em near cover they do not seem to fear much and become quite territorial hitting lures with complete abandon even big lures intended for Pike.
Maybe try and get out chuckin a few lures about (firetiger spinners, small alphabet type plugs or ultralights-usually brightish colours and erratic actions do well) and see what that tells you. Pike on the other hand will usually not to for from dinner especially in winter and that could go hand in hand with the stripeys!
let me know how you get on as i have a soft spot for Perch and plan on doing a bit this winter.
hope this helps

the pike may favor the dark places gives them more camoflauge to ambush its prey aswell as the perch dont like sunlight which is why you can always find perch under neath bridges and over hanging trees, if your going to target the pike make sure you have all the correct unhooking and saftey equiptment, i find a great pike bait on canals being a live perch fished under a livebait slider and just letting it drift along the far bank
