Need some input.

I am planning on prizing the old wallet open and buying a new reel. I need something with

size equivilent to a Shimano 4000,
double or single handle,
baitrunner facility not needed
front or rear drag but needs to be smooth
extra spools available (I only intend using a maximum 6lb mono or less and 100m capacity would be adequate)

Thing is I have only owned Shimano's in the past and looking around you can get similar specifications on reels from Okuma, for example, for a lot less. In fact I could get two for the price of one Shimano which would be great. Only thing is I having never owned another make don't know where to start.

Top budget is £60 but would go a bit more for a pair. Any suggestions?

I had a demo of some okuma ones, they were about 50squids 3 spools and baitrunner-bargain!
next time i`m in there i`ll get you the model they really looked the hounds rounds for the money! and alot of big names use okuma, Indeed the ones I`ve had for years (and used `em alot in saltwater) have not given any troubles
If you can push your budget, i just got one of those Diawa TDR blue ones, they really are the best small reel i`ve ever used, but then again its about £120!
To be honest these days if you go to reputable makes its quite hard to buy shite, but you can`t go wrong with shimano

Okuma baitrunners always fall apart.

Go for the Shimano Hyperloop range which look like a chav's car but they do the business. 2000 to 6000 size are about erm "Cheap as Chips" (repeat in the style of David Dickinson) I got a 6000RB for 25 sheets with the smaller versions for the price of a 4 pack down my local tackle shop.

Go with the Shimano's I'm running Okuma for the carp rods at the moment and they are shite. 10000's like Waynes (WKD) or big pit Shimanos are on my order list A.S.A.P. Stick to what you know Damo.

Cheers apl

Choosing a new reel is bloody hard work. I don't need a baitrunner as I already have two shimano's for this. I want something for the smaller species so a match reel would be better.

Its hard though to look away from Shimano as the range is extensive and the pedigree top class. Budget has been increased (sssh don't tell you know who!!!) so will probably go for two mid range models rather than one top of the range reel. Problem is I am a bit heavy handed with my geare and although I don't break much I don't think I could relax with over 100 quid of reel on the bank.

If budget has been raised then have a shufty at those Diawa TDRs before you make any decisions, apparently some of the match boys(like WKD now he has crossed over to the dark side!) have binned their old reels in favour.
