A funny little story with which to amuse you all.

I had a few hours of fruitless deadbaitng this morning with the exception of one fish caught under unusual circumstances.

After about an hour I decided to reposition my float rig so removed the previous bait and cast out the unbaited rig to find the depth. Upon winding in the rod bent over and I thought the bare hooks had found weed but a knock on the tip told me a small jack had taken hold. I'd left the bait tag on.

The small jack popped to the surface and was hit by a bigger pike about 20 yards out but it let go within seconds. The poor little jack came in battered and bruised and unfortunately wouldn't go back and went belly up.

Anyway not wanting the waste an opportunity the 12 inch jack is know in the freezer leaving me with the mother of all pike baits.

Just need to find the mother of all rigs to mount it on!!

Use a length of trace wire and a knitting needle. I've done this in the past with oversize deads. Crimp a treble to the trace (overlength) the pull the trace through the dead bait using a knitting needle exiting at the mouth. Tie another length of trace (over length too) to a swivel and put the first trace through the spare swivel eye. Attach the second trace (loose end) to the knitting needle and feed it through the mouth and out of the belly of the dead. Crimp on a treble under the belly of the dead. Slide the swivel up the first trace until you can bed in a hook on the second trace's treble. Just below the swivel add a small amount of Kryston rig putty or Kryston floating putty.

What you have got is a big old smelly lure. Grin

First time I shared this tip with anyone. If you don't get it let me know and i'll post a diagram.
