Yes i've been shopping!

Picked up 3 of these rods on Thursday last week after hearing some lads have been chopping in their Greys for a set which made my ears prick up Shocked

First impressions were that the rods looked the business with a super slim blank and minimalist branding on the rod.

Closer up the rod blank has 2 different weave patterns with the usual chequered flag pattern on the butt section and a tight spiral pattern (1mm) on the tip section. This power blank setup also threw an interesting spanner into the works as unlike most rods the TC is painted on the tip section rather than the butt as is the norm. The current XLNT Barbel rod comes with 2 tips as standard so maybe interchangeable tips to vary the TC for these rods is in the pipeline too. Watch this space Exclamation
Finish on the blank is (as you would expect) immaculate with subtle things like the put over continuing the carbon pattern of the butt section rather than the usual matt black, lack lustre affair. The rods also have a nice carbon line clip whipped onto the blank too. These are proper tackle tart rods Very Happy

The official spec for these rods are as follows:

High modulus Power carbon blank. (These rods are classed as distance rods)
Carbon line clip as standard
Lightweight SIC (Silicon Carbide) guides. (I bought the 2 leg type)
Fuji Reel Seat.
Life time warranty. (Make sure you keep your reciept or pass it on if you sell the rods in the future)

On the bankside these rods were by far the best i've used (even though I blanked) on the cast as they are predictable and there is little variation rod to rod. This rod to rod comparison may seem a bit daft but one of my current Wychwoods (both 3lb TC) is much softer on the tip than the other which always catches me out and leads to over or undercasting depending on which rod I pick up. The XLNT's were a doddle to get used to and the first cast was a gentle lob and took a 3oz lead to around 50yd's with ease and on the button. Surprisingly the tip section even with a 3oz lead seemed to really sag which is strange for a 3.25TC rod, but it seems the tip section responds to loading the rod and the faster you move the rod the stiffer it gets at the launch. At this point I thought it was just me being over excited about my new rods but when I let my mate have a cast with one he completely overcooked it on the cast.

His words were "Expletive deleted! I thought I was going into the bushes on the far bank (100yds+) and had to slow it down"
He still landed it in another anglers margin swim on the opposite side and quickly handed me the rod to reel it back in Shocked
After the fluffed cast he told me that casting that far with one of these rods was effortless and caught him out big time.

Other nice touches to the rods is the placement of the reel seat with a good gap between the butt handle and the seat to give a more natural hand placement with an 18" gap between. To finish off the reel seat is also angled so the spool faces the butt ring this also means it faces the tip ring to improve your cast.

So what bad things do I have to say about these rods so far..... well to be honest not much as I havent caught on them yet so this topic is not complete. I'll comment on playing fish on them as and when my dry spell ends. But if one thing really annoyed me was the product barcode sticker on the reel seat. I fished in pouring rain hoping to soften up the glue on the sticker to remove them. If they were nailed on they couldn't be harder to get off. But this is a minor gripe as a sticker won't stop the rod doing it's job. Another thing is that the carbon line clip is a little too tight to the blank but that could be me just being too gentle with my new babies and not even trying to flex them (don't want to damage the whipping Rolling Eyes ). Oh well i'll keep this thread updated when the newness wears off and I start to give them the rough treatment.

So Far..... So Good,

Update to follow.

Giles.
